First, a beautiful story
We first met Sibongile Mateyisi when he arrived one day with our garden maintenance company, another one of the countless casual labourers seeking work, and a wage, across South Africa each day. But it didn’t take long before we saw that his energy, enthusiasm and eagerness to learn were wasted behind the handles of a wheelbarrow.
Local economic empowerment is at the core of Banhoek Chili Oil, so we brought Sibongile into the fold; training him in the production of Banhoek Chili Oil, which was then being made in our home production facility. Unsurprisingly, he flourished, and within two short years he was in charge of the entire production process, transforming sacks of raw chilies into the delicious infused oil you find in your pantry today.
It was then that he approached Ken Kinsey-Quick, founder of Banhoek Chili Oil with a simple request: to invest in the company with his own hard-earned salary. We were thrilled that he wanted to build his future alongside the company, and immediately welcomed him as one of the shareholders. What’s more, we have matched his investment rand for rand, increasing his stake in the future success of Banhoek Chilli Oil into the future. Just like the fiery chillies that flavour our award-winning oil, from small seeds come great things!
At Banhoek Chili Oil we care just as much about our local community as we do about our chilies. To this end we have structured our business to ensure sustainable and responsible business practices that help to uplift the surrounding area.
Located amid the beautiful Cape winelands, the team at Banhoek Chili Oil are passionate about the environment. Our production processes have been carefully designed to minimise wastage, and we have ongoing recycling initiatives on-site in order to minimise our environmental footprint. Aside from relying on the sun to dry our chilies, we use alternative and green energy sources as far as possible.
South Africa is a country with enormous inequality and social challenges, not least soaring unemployment levels. To provide as many employment opportunities as possible Banhoek Chili Oil always favours human capital over automation.
The bulk of our employees are drawn from the disadvantaged communities of the Banhoek valley, and we always hire locally before looking further afield for specific skill-sets. Hiring locals helps to alleviate social issues in our immediate area, but also ensures staff can save on transport costs by walking to work.
We have also instituted an Emerging Farmers programme to uplift local growers. Our dream, our goal, is that eventually we will be able to purchase all of our chilies from the local community, contributing much needed secondary employment and income to the area.

Health and safety is paramount across our custom-built production kitchens, with all staff undergoing rigorous training and ongoing professional development in terms of food safety best-practice.
Banhoek Chili Oil has a long-term strategy for local and global success. As such, we take our responsibilities as a corporate citizen seriously. The founders, and board of directors, have ensured that Banhoek Chili Oil has a prudent business strategy and appropriate corporate governance in place.
